Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to play some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and lose most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he might boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The actual advancement in his game began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often challenge one another. He was able to access a few of the best players in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his logical thinking skills. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. She was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best women players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
